We went to Jonas Gerard's studio yesterday (April 19, 2008). What an awesome experience. He was out of town, which worked well, because I wasn't ready to come face-to-face with the artist on my initial visit. He is the most popular artist in Asheville. He is part of the River District Artists' group and has a 5,000 ft. studio/gallery right near the French Broad river. His staff mentioned yesterday that he is very backlogged on requests for his art. His works start at $50 for a print and $75 for a ceramic tile (and the way he creates those is a very interesting process but I don't remember how the process was described - my memory isn't what it used to be (another reason to go back to the studio, again and again...)) - but some of the paintings on canvas and his sculptures go as high as $20,000! I have never been so moved by an artist before (not even Frida Kahlo, but it would be unfair to make the comparison because they have completely different styles, circumstances, and are from different time periods). If you are interested, go to his web site and you will see a link to a video (in the first row on the left of the page) which not only shows the process of his work, but also shows a very happy man doing what he loves to do. I was told that I could take pictures, and we were also told that we could even touch the paintings - to feel the energy that the work holds. I did take pictures - and those are the ones I will post, but his site will of course have better photos. We were allowed into the studio where he works, which was awesome, because we got to see the tools and paints he uses. There are rooms sectioned off and the displays are very impressive when you see them up close. Here are the pics I took - click on the picture for a larger image. Enjoy!
