May 2, 2008 - Day 12 without a cigarette!

Yesterday I was in a funk.  I had taken a medication to help
me sleep that I hadn't taken in a couple of months and it
made me wake up groggy and feeling "off".  I slept until 10:30
(after being awake from 12:30 until after 2:00) and I felt like
I had wasted the day.  As a result, I only completed one
painting.  I guess I am one of those people who expresses
their creativity more readily when they are happy.  I couldn't
find a groove, didn't feel "present".  So, I prepared several
paintings for when I feel better.  The one I did I am
No big deal.  I was bound to have an off day.  At least my
days are more on than off.  It used to the be the opposite.  I
spent a lot of years in a funk or worse.  Now my tolerance
level for them is very low.

One of the things I did to try to feel better was to visit the
studio of my new hero,
Jonas Gerard.  Delores drove me.  She
likes him too.  It was our second visit to his studio.  He was
out of town, but he will be around this weekend so we are
going to try to catch him on Sunday after church.  I am dying
to meet him.  A member of his staff told us today that he will
be doing performance painting on May 19th.  I will be there.
They are going to raffle off one of his paintings!  He is going
to present the Mayor of Asheville and the President of the
Chamber with paintings - the purpose of the event.  It's
around Jonas' birthday, so he is contributing his works as a
way to thank the City for welcoming him with open arms.  As I
was walking through his awesome gallery, I was hit - in spite
of my funk - with an overwhelming sense of gratitude.  How
many people can say that they can visit their (now) all-time
favorite artist's studio any time they want to?  I am so
grateful.  I feel so fortunate.  Not just for that, but for so
many things.

Tomorrow we are going to the
Spartanburg, SC "Spring Fling".
It's an hour and a half away.  The artist who has a gallery and
is having the Curbside Art event I am attending on May 17th
is one of the participating vendors in their
"Outsider Art"
exhibit.  She is a painter.  Should be a lot of fun.  It sounds a
lot like the Alexandria Waterfront Festival - music, food, and
vendors.  Maybe they will have funnel cakes!
